Concept & Theme
The "Melting Presence" is an light based artistic project referring to recent ecological changes. There is a lot of important and parallel result of our bad habits. Some of them we can see clearly, air and water. Some are hidden.
As the old saying says "What the eye can't see, the heart doesn't hurt." The aim of this art-piece is to change the knowing of the issue into the presence feeling.
At the same time there is a game, between the human size and macro-scale view of the physical process of melting ice. Slow but unstoppable analogue motion of liquid surface visible in laser light refraction.
Visitor Experience
Absorbing, immersive, indefinable, in constant transformation. Reminiscent of generic mathematical fractals, a record of genetic processes, or a scheme of neural synapses. With a high aesthetic influence, it draws the viewer into the process of silent meditation, like looking at space constellations.
Technical solution
Powerful laser light glow through the ice cube. On the common atmospheric condition the surface of the ice is melting. Laser Light refraction felting on opposite wall, showing amazing natural fractals changing and moving in oversized scale. We can see the melting of the ice in real-time. Depending on the power of the laser light and the distance from the screen, it can be displayed at any scale.Thanks to this in principle simple technological combination we are able to see melting ice in real time. For an intense and constant visible visual experience, the temperature around the ice cube should be slightly above zero. At a test temperature of 10 degrees Celsius, the life of one cube is approximately two hours. With a simple stack, an unattended image can be projected for eight to ten hours with minimal electrical noise.
